What is a Diesel Particulate Filter?

A Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is an exhaust aftertreatment device fitted to diesel vehicles to capture and store soot particles produced during combustion. The filter periodically undergoes a process called regeneration, where trapped soot is burned off at high temperatures.

When your driving pattern doesn't allow the DPF to regenerate properly, such as frequent short journeys or city driving, soot builds up and the filter becomes blocked. This triggers warning lights, reduces engine power, and can put your vehicle into limp mode.

At EcoMax Tuning in Peterborough, we specialise in professional DPF cleaning that restores your filter to full working condition without the need for expensive replacement.

Signs Your DPF Needs Cleaning

  • DPF warning light illuminated
  • Loss of power or limp mode
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Excessive exhaust smoke
  • Strong exhaust smell
  • Failed MOT emissions test

Our DPF Cleaning Process

Full Diagnostics

We scan for fault codes and assess DPF soot levels to determine the best approach for your vehicle.

Professional Clean

Using forced regeneration, chemical treatment, or off-car cleaning depending on severity.

Verification

Post-clean diagnostics and road test to confirm the DPF is regenerating correctly and warning lights are cleared.

DPF Cleaning & Removal Options

DPFs commonly become blocked due to frequent short journeys that do not allow regeneration to complete, underlying engine or sensor faults, or internal DPF damage and cracking. We offer three different solutions depending on the condition of the vehicle and the DPF.

Option 1 – On-Car DPF Cleaning – £350

Includes:

  • 1 hour of diagnostics and testing
  • Smoke test of the intake system
  • Fault code analysis
  • Exhaust inspection to identify signs of a cracked DPF
  • On-car DPF cleaning process

Before carrying out any DPF cleaning, it is essential that we complete a number of checks to ensure there are no underlying faults causing the blockage.

Provided no major issues are found, we can perform an on-car DPF clean to remove soot build-up and help restore performance.

If any underlying faults are identified during testing, we can either provide a repair quotation or carry out further diagnostics at £100 + VAT per hour. Up to 1 hour of diagnostic and repair time is included within the £350 package.

Option 2 – Off-Car DPF Machine Cleaning

We offer professional off-car DPF cleaning using our £12,000 specialist DPF cleaning machine. The advantage of this process is that it removes both soot and ash build-up, restoring the DPF much closer to its original efficiency.

Pricing

  • Initial diagnostics (as above): £100
  • DPF machine cleaning: £250*
  • DPF removal and refitting labour: £100 per hour*

*Labour time can vary significantly depending on the vehicle and typically ranges from 2–10 hours. Please provide your registration number for an accurate quotation.

*Whilst DPF cleaning is highly effective at removing soot and ash build-up, it is important to understand that we cannot guarantee or provide a warranty on any DPF cleaning service.

Modern DPF systems are unfortunately prone to problems and can become blocked due to a wide range of factors, including driving style, sensor faults, air leaks, boost leaks, injector issues, EGR faults and other underlying mechanical problems. In many cases, multiple small issues can contribute to a DPF becoming blocked.

We take DPF diagnosis and cleaning seriously and have successfully carried out thousands of DPF cleans. However, we believe in being completely transparent with our customers regarding the risks and available options. Even after a successful clean, there is always a possibility that the DPF could become blocked again in the future if an underlying fault develops or remains present.

Once the DPF has been successfully cleaned and any underlying faults have been repaired, the vehicle should be able to regenerate correctly and clean the DPF automatically, typically every 150–200 miles depending on driving conditions and vehicle usage.

This option is often recommended where the DPF contains a high ash load that cannot be removed through normal regeneration or on-car cleaning methods.

Option 3 – DPF Removal Solution – £590* (Most Vehicles)

Includes:

  • Physical DPF removal
  • DPF system switched off within the ECU software
  • EGR system switched off via software/remap

Included Benefits

  • Lifetime warranty against future DPF-related faults
  • Lifetime warranty against future EGR-related faults

We recommend reading our article regarding the legalities surrounding DPF removal: DPF Removal Information.

*Most vehicles can be completed for this price. Some vehicles may require additional labour or parts. Please contact us with your registration number for an accurate quotation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our on-car DPF cleaning service is £350 and includes 1 hour of diagnostics and testing, a smoke test of the intake, fault code analysis, exhaust inspection and the on-car cleaning process. We also offer off-car machine cleaning and full DPF removal — see the options below for full pricing.

A standard DPF clean typically takes between 2-4 hours depending on the severity of the blockage. In some cases where a forced regeneration is required, it may take a little longer. We'll keep you informed throughout the process.

Yes. A properly cleaned DPF will allow your vehicle to pass the emissions test at MOT. Since 2014, the DPF is a visual check item on the MOT, so the filter must be present and functioning correctly.

Common signs include the DPF warning light on the dashboard, loss of power or limp mode, increased fuel consumption, excessive smoke from the exhaust, and unusual smells. If you notice any of these, get your DPF checked promptly to avoid costly damage.
